Jaron Lanier’s idea on VR communication

Our possible Future

Chris’ comment on wanting to be a cephalopod reminded me of this article Lanier wrote for discovery.com.

Jaron Lanier “What cephalopods can teach us about language”

It’s a short article, but the basic idea is that cephalopods can communicate in color and shape, and with virtual worlds there’s no reason why we cannot communicate that way as well.  When we are in an avatar, nothing binds us to spoken language.  Cephalopods point to an interesting way we could talk to one another.

Though it’s about VR, it could be about transhuman as well.  No reason a morph couldn’t augment his skin and translate through youtube feeds projected on his chest, or colors and harsh shapes.

  1. Lanier’s webpage is great. I put it in our Links page, accessible from the top bar.
